Pararoos humble in their defeat of Finland

In the early stages of the match Finland were tenacious getting the toe in often and frustrating Australia. Finland tried valiantly against the Pararoos, but had difficulty against the combinations of Menzies, Roche and Pyne.
Finland took the early ascendancy forcing a good save from Rookie Goalkeeper Jared Eiby. The number 9 Janne Helander from Finland shot from 28 m out for the ball to just be tipped wide of the post by Eiby.

Carlos Tevez set to star for Argentina in Copa America curtain-raiser - report

Manchester City forward  set to start Argentina's first  America clash against Bolivia, after being included in the first team in training under the watchful eye of coach Sergio Batista.
reports that  got the nod over Real Madrid's Angel Di Maria and was included alongside Lionel  and Ezequiel in Tuesday's training session, three days before the curtain-raiser in La . Argentina trained behind closed doors in the complex, using the team that is expected to compose the first XI.

The decision marks a remarkable turn-around for the player, who had looked set to miss out just one month ago before Batista performed a u-turn and decided to include him in the 23-man squad. It is the only change that will be made from last Monday's final warm-up game against Albania, with the other 10 men unchanged from a 4-0 victory in the Monumental.

Argentina's defensive options don't match the class of its forwards Read more: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/writers/marcela_morayaraujo/06/28/argentina.defenders/index.html#ixzz1QfbzlFIP

One could make a very strong case that no other team in the world has forwards as talented as Argentina's, the team currently has no less than six world-class options -- Carlos Tevez even pronounced it with confidence after La Albiceleste's last pre Copa America 2011 friendly against Albania last week. But then, in the famous adage of former England midfielder John Gregory, strikers win you games, but defenders win you championships.
Argentina is renowned the world over for the sheer volume and quality of creative players it provides in midfield and forward, but the question that begs is -- what about the back? For years now, if not decades, the single most worrying issue for Argentina and its fans has been the weakness and lack of options when it comes to protecting the own goal.
Is the nation really as defensively challenged as the cliché suggests? Will this tournament in particular be adversely affected by the unequal distribution of talent on the pitch?
Starting at the very back, at goal, manager Sergio Batista has already come under intense mockery  after he posted messages of support to goalkeeper Juan Pablo Carrizo -- a broken man following River Plate's relegation. The national squad cannot have a goalie from the nacional B! is the general gist of the most common outcry.
Carrizo, one of the three goalkeepers in the squad, sports the No. 1 on his shirt. Monday's news conference, the first of the tournament, should therefore have seen him and the No. 2 player addressing the media, such is the system devised to rotate the players. But in order to protect him, the decision was made to invert the direction. And so, the very first news conference started with players No. 23 and 22 -- Diego Milito and Sergio Romero respectively. Romero, the first choice goalkeeper during the World Cup, echoed requests for Carrizo to be treated gently, specially if he turns out to be a starter.
Anyone familiar with the lonely position of goalkeeping will vouch that the task is aided no end by solid defenders. So where there's a back line of consummate professionals, there's hope.
The most titanic task on the pitch wrote Oscar Barnade, vice president of the Research Centre for the History of Football [CIHF], was that  the old right back. In order to dominate the whole area, he had to be fast, courageous, and able to mark firmly. He was expected to cover the spaces left open by the half on the right and the other back on the left. He was the patron of the area.
The first maestro in that position was Jorge Gibson Brown, the legendary Alumni sides captain, but by the time Argentina started disputing internationally in the South American tournament, in 1916, Brown had already retired.
More recent exponents in Copa America: Ruben Navarro (1963), Iseln Ovejero (1967), Jose Luis Pavoni (1975), Jose daniel Van Tuyne (1975 Y 1979), Roberto Mouzo (1983). Current assistant manager Jose Luis Tata Brown was a starter in 1987 and 1989 (although playing a little more as a libero than a classical back as Barnade points out) and Argentina's last triumph in a Copa America, in 1993, saw Jorge Horacio Borelli in that position.
The household name for the last two decades has without a doubt been Roberto Ayala, "The Mouse," widely regarded as one of the best defenders of his generation. Ayala represented Argentina 115 times over the years. He played the Copa America in 1995, 1999, 2004 and 2007  19 appearances which make his the third capped player in Copa America after Diego Simeone and Amrico Tesoriere -- but never won it. Arguably, no replacement for Ayala has since emerged.

Argentina rely on Messi, Tevez

: Two factors ought to weigh heavily in Argentina’s as they embark on the America, Latin America’s answer to the European Championship, from Friday.

First of all, they should be able to count on vociferous support as the host nation although as players of relegated River Plate will reflect, it is when you are down that the fans will kick you the hardest.

Home advantage can be a double-edged sword as the Argentinians know full well given that they lost out to Uruguay in the then South American Championship in 1916, when the notion of an international tournament was in its infancy.

Argentina are hosting for the first time since 1987, when they were flushed with their Diego inspired World Cup success  notably after his exploits with hand and boot against England before a win over Germany in a stirring final.

Back then, the  came unstuck as they lost in the semi-finals to Uruguay, who bagged a then record 13th title (they now share 14 with Argentina) despite the home side possessing firepower of the himself and Claudio .

Footballing rivalry is intense enough across Latin America but the weight of hosting the tournament hangs heavy.

That is especially so for Argentina, who have been hosts eight times and, aside from their 1987 slip-up and another against the Uruguayans back in 1916, have won the trophy on every other occasion that they have welcomed their.

Much will depend on the second factor  whether they can get star man Lionel to dig deep after a marathon season in Europe with Barcelona and harness his incredible club form to his sky blue and white-striped ambitions.

Argentina have won nothing at senior level since the 1993 edition under  Basile and are looking to  and the likes of the irrepressible Carlos  to remove that stain.

After six  not to mention five World Cups elapsing since then, patience is understandably wearing thin  two straight Olympic gold medals notwithstanding.

Small wonder, then, that fans of the home team demand an end to the drought come the July 24 final at the Monumental stadium in .

Coach Sergio Batista has to keep his eye on two balls at once given that he is under pressure to deliver on the home front over the next few weeks but also put in place the backbone of a new generation which can give Brazil a run for their money at the 2014 World Cup over the border.

With Brazil on a  Batista and company will be anxious to avoid that scenario and hence want  to take the baton and spark a much longed-for triumph to top off a tremendous season under Pep at Barcelona.

World foofball Legends Argentina 1949

PERSONAL DETAILS
Full Name: Carlos Bianchi
Date of Birth: Tuesday, 26 April 1949
Place of Birth: Buenos Aires, Argentina
Position: Forward/Manager
Despite never having a great playing career at international level, Argentinian striker Carlos Bianchi enjoyed an extremely successful career at club level in Argentina and France. He went on to become one of South America's most successful coaches, winning numerous domestic honours in Argentina in the 1990s and the early years of the 21st Century. Bianchi's club career started in 1967 with Vélez Sarsfield, where he would enjoy two extremely successful spells. His six year first stay with the club saw him become one of Argentina's most prolific strikers, forcing his way briefly into the national team in the early 1970's, although he never played in a major tournament. Vélez won the only major trophy of Bianchi's playing career in 1968, taking the Nacional Championship. In 1973, Bianchi left Argentina and embarked on a very successful career in France. Although he won no major honours during his seven years in France, Bianchi was leading scorer in the French League no fewer than five times in six seasons. He spent four years with Stade de Reims and two with Paris Saint Germain, and was by some margin the leading scorer in France during this period. After one season with Racing Club Strasbourg, he returned to Argentina to end his playing career with a second spell at Vélez Sarsfield. After retiring from playing, Bianchi returned to Stade de Reims to start his managerial career in 1984, and after short spells at OGC Nice and Paris FC he returned to Vélez for the third time to become manager in 1993. In his first year, Bianchi led Vélez to the Argentinian Closing Championship, and added the Libertadores Cup the following year. After guiding Vélez to the Opening Championship in 1995 and another Closing Championship in 1996, Bianchi spent a short time with AS Roma, but by 1998 he had taken charge of Boca Juniors. It was with Boca that Bianchi secured his reputation as one of the world's finest coaches. In two spells in charge, between 1998 and 2004, he led the club to three Opening Championships and one Closing Championship, but it was in the Libertadores Cup that the greatest success would come. Boca won the competition three times in four years - 2000, 2001 and 2003. Bianchi became the first coach to win four Libertadores Cups in his career. He was named South American manager of the year each time, an award he had already won in 1994 and 1998. Shortly after leaving Boca for the second time in 2004, Bianchi turned down the chance to manage the Argentinian national team and returned to Europe in 2005 to coach Atlético Madrid, but failed to last a season in the job.

History of football in Albania

Football arrived in Albania at the beginning of the 20th century. The first recorded match was between students at a Christian mission in . The game increased in popularity and by 1919 the first club, KS had been founded. In 1920 SK Tirana was also founded, other towns and cities followed suit and on 6 June 1930 the Football Association of Albania  was established. The association became a member of football's governing body  in 1932, and joined the  in 1954 as a founding member. A domestic championship began in 1930 with 6 teams. Tirana were the inaugural winners. They, together with such sides are KS  Tirana, and have continued to dominate the Albanian scene until the present day. The years following World War II saw a new political order, with the introduction of a communist system which had a positive impact as far as the game's appeal was concerned. Football became . Its infrastructure grew stronger as the game was and developed in state enterprises, schools, villages and towns. New institutional clubs were founded such  (1946) and  Tirana (1950) (governed respectively by Ministry of and Ministry of Internal Affairs). Until 1990 they were privileged in relation to the other clubs as they were able to get players from other teams. From 1991, there were crucial political and economic changes that had a tremendous effect on the nation, as the  economy and political system came to an end. The result for the country's footballers was an opportunity to play their trade on foreign fields.  Greece and the Balkan states were popular destinations for players who were good enough to go abroad.

Marseille eyeing Drogba

Marseille are interested in re-signing Didier Drogba - but only if the club can afford to meet the Ivorian striker's wage demands.
Drogba starred for OM during his single season at the Velodrome before departing for Chelsea in a £24million move in 2004. The 33-year-old has a year remaining on his current deal at Stamford Bridge and it is not yet known if he is part of new Blues manager Andre Villas-Boas' plans.
Marseille president Vincent Labrune told La Provence newspaper: "The question is whether in terms of salary, I do not mean the transfer, Marseille have the means for four years to pay Didier Drogba."
"I answer 'yes'. But we cannot afford 11 Didier Drogbas," he added. "So is it possible? Yes, but in the case of departures."

Gerrard enthused by Reds progress

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard is confident the club now have in place the right structure in order for them to start winning trophies again.
The Reds' last piece of silverware was the 2006 FA Cup, in which Gerrard played a starring role, but the England midfielder feels they are now better placed to end that drought.
"What I can say to the fans is that Liverpool will be back among the trophies sooner rather than later because we are moving in the right direction," he said.
He added: "We have got fantastic players, the structure of the club is healthy from top to bottom and when that is the case then the team won't be too far away from winning."
Gerrard also believes Liverpool's wait for another league title, which now stands at 21 years, has a greater chance of being ended.
"We will get the championship again. It's difficult to say when because that adds a lot of pressure to the team," he added on liverpoolfc.tv.

Kit

Traditionally, the team plays in a home strip of green shirt, white shorts and green socks. The second strip is usually the reverse of these  although there have been exceptions, such as an orange shirt in the late 1990s.
Currently, the kit is supplied by and has been since 1995. In March 2009,  signed a deal with the to keep them as kit suppliers to the team until 2020.
Previously  and made the team's kit. Shirts carry the logo of telecommunications company across the chest as per terms of a sponsorship agreement, but in all official international games, as per  law, this advertising is absent.
Squad numbers are either white with an orange trim, as is the case with the home shirts, or green with an orange trim. At the bottom of the numbering there is a logo of the .
There is also a limited edition grey shirt available. The team have only ever used it once and that was in a 2-2 draw with Wales on 17 November 2007. A black jersey with a green stripe across the chest was worn in the final game of the  against Scotland and in a friendly which Ireland won 2-0 against .

Barcelona prepare to secure Arsenal's Cesc Fábregas with £35m bid

Barcelona are poised to return with an improved £35m offer for Cesc Fábregas and believe that sum will be enough to secure the Arsenal captain and end one of the modern game's longest-running transfer sagas.
The European and Spanish champions have detected a softening in Arsenal's resolve over their talisman and they feel that, in contrast to last summer, when Arsène Wenger made it clear that he would not sell Fábregas at any price, the Gunners are now ready to do business.
Fábregas, who is currently on holiday in Spain, wanted to move back to Barcelona, his former club, last summer and following another season at Arsenal that promised much but delivered nothing in terms of trophies his attitude has only hardened.
He would prefer the deal to be done before he is due to report for pre-season training at Arsenal next Tuesday, meaning that he could remain in Spain. Arsenal depart for a mini-tour of Malaysia and China on Sunday week and it would not be difficult to imagine the sideshow if Fábregas were still the club captain and he made the trip. It could undermine the tour and its chief purpose, which is to promote the Arsenal brand.
Barcelona had two bids for Fábregas turned down last summer ? the second of ¤40m ? while they have been back with £27m (about ?30.2m) this summer, an offer which again was rejected. Barcelona have attempted to drive down the price claiming that, due to the amortisation of his contract, he ought to be worth less. That argument has been given short shrift at Arsenal; Fábregas, 24, is on a long-term contract until 2015.
Yet there have been concerns at the club that they might be unable to deny Fábregas his dream move once again and that, if Barcelona could pay £40m, the money could be reinvested in Wenger's transfer targets. Barça hope that a compromise of £35m will enable the deal to be done.
Barcelona, who are deeply in debt, have indicated a willingness to include fringe players in part-exchange for Fábregas but Wenger is not interested in any of them. He has his own list of targets and he appears to be ready to push the button on various deals. This will be a summer when Arsenal are proactive.

Hearts 3 St Mirren 2: match report

Michael Higdon had put St Mirren ahead in the 50th minute but Hearts drew level five minutes later when Skacel got clear of Jim Goodwin to track a shot past Paul Gallacher from 20 yards.
Higdon got his second of the game when he smashed a shot into the net from just outside the box to put St Mirren back into the lead in the 69th minute.
However Ryan Stevenson hauled Hearts level eight minutes from time and Skacel sealed it for the Jambos when he smacked a shot past Gallacher deep into injury time.
Hearts' 18th win of the season helped them reinforced third spot, and they now sit seven points behind champions Rangers who have played three games less.
Celtic, who face Rangers in the League Cup final on Sunday, sit top with a two-point cushion on Rangers although the Ibrox side have played a game less

Newcastle new boy happy that Liverpool move broke down

NEWCASTLE United new boy Sylvain Marveaux says he has no regrets after a move to Liverpool broke down.
And the midfielder instead insists he couldn’t be happier after joining Alan Pardew’s French revolution.
Marveaux came close to signing for Kenny Dalglish, but the proposed deal fell through at the 11th hour earlier this month because of a contractual issue – and he crossed the Pennines to head to St James’s Park.
The 25-year-old, a long-time target of the club, was out of contract at Rennes, and joined on a free transfer.
“I’m very, very happy to be here,” said left-footed Marveaux, who has been likened to former Newcastle winger Laurent Robert.
“Newcastle came to me six months ago, and they always told me how much they wanted me. I appreciated that.
“When I came here I got a wonderful welcome, and everybody here was happy to see me sign here.
“I was in contact with Liverpool. I was really close to signing for them.
“The story about (failing) the medical is not true, only a rumour. What happened was there were some changes in the contract from the first time we had a discussion.
“I decided to come here. It won’t be a grudge match when we play Liverpool – it’s not revenge or anything.
“If anything, I am just looking forward to making my Premier League debut when we play Arsenal.
“I’ve known for over a year that I was going to be available on a free transfer. I also knew I would be leaving France, and during these past 12 months I really wanted to play in England.
“People have told me the style is different, but all I want to do is enjoy my football.”
Marveaux became United’s third summer signing, joining fellow midfielder and countryman Yohan Cabaye and striker Demba Ba at the club, where there is a growing French influence.
And the former France Under-21 international, having visited St James’s Park to sign, is relishing pulling on a black and white shirt at the club’s iconic home.

Football Ferns target top points after loss

New Zealand have emerged from their toughest pool match at the soccer women's World Cup in Germany with their confidence intact despite a 1-2 loss to Japan today, coach John Herdman said.
The teams were level at halftime after Amber Hearn's 12th minute header cancelled out Yuki Nagasato's sixth minute opener,
But Japanese super sub Mana Iwabuchi won a freekick on the edge of the area, which Aya Miyama duly converted in the 68th minute.
Herdman said his team would fight on: "We'll wash that one away in the shower and have a good cry tonight and wake up tomorrow ready to roll."
Canada-based striker Hearn's bullet header came courtesy of Ottowa Fury teammate Ria Percival's pin-point cross, and left coach Herdman a happy man.
"It was pretty cool - it got us back into the game. I didn't expect it so soon after the (first) goal," he said.
"Amber Hearn is off the mark and hopefully she can be a threat in the coming games."
Hearn's personal satisfaction at scoring was tempered with disappointment at the loss, but she said afterwards the Football Ferns were still targeting their next two pool matches with confidence.
